In the winter of 2024, working collaboratively with Tomiko Jones we worked on Cloud & Smoke. We are both researching archives and family stories and together created the artist book Cloud & Smoke using risograph and letterpress printing. In situ cyanotype photo images were made by Tomiko at the Catalina Federal Honor Camp, a prison holding Japanese American dissidents during WWII. Today, the site is named Gordon Hirabayashi Recreation Site, Coronado National Forest, Arizona. Additional images were used from Karen’s and Tomiko’s family images or objects including a Japanese text as an excerpt from a Japanese–English dictionary recovered at Tomiko’s grandparent's home in Hawai'i. The book was typeset, printed, and hand-bound in a limited edition of 20.
