Fifty-two (52) is a book created to explore my identity through places, people, and both personal and historical events. On the year of my fifty-second birthday, I found myself with a group of friends exploring Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty in Utah. During this experience, we each made a pact to create a book. I decided that my book would focus on where I was at that moment and where I had been throughout my life. I also took time to reflect on the significance of the number 52 and what it represents. The narrative of the book unfolds chronologically through the years. I touch upon the concept of family lineage, noting that my daughter could be approximately 52% Caucasian and 48% Nuxalk, a North West Canadian Aboriginal group. This measurement, similar to counting, is an abstract concept. I approach these themes through an abstract narrative, utilizing collage as a metaphor to convey a multitude of ideas.
